speaker boehner should call members of the house back to washington today. he shouldn't have let them go, in fact. they're not here. they are not here. john boehner seems to care more about keeping his speakership than keeping the nation on a firm financial footing. it's obvious what's going on. he's waiting until january 3 to get reelected to speaker because he has so many people over there that won't follow what he wants. that's obvious from the debacle that took place last week. and it was a debacle. he made an offer to the president, the president came back, they're just a little bit apart, and he walked away there that and went to plan b. which all it did is whack people who need help the most. poor people. and he couldn't even pass that. remember, he's not letting the house of representatives vote, he's letting the republicans vote. it was so bad and he was in such difficult shape there he wouldn't even allow a vote to take place with his republicans because he knew he would lose. for months he's allowed house republicans to hold middle-class taxpayers

was trapped and we all went over there, all of us together, a bipartisan team to go over to speaker boehner, chairman mica and say, okay, let's get it done. and so it did. so it can get done. but we are where we are where we are. and this morning we had a choi choice, and, frankly, i was proud to see the overwhelming vote that we had. it was really amazing. 89-8. and i think -- i don't know what motivates every colleague. i only know what motivated me to feel that this was an important "aye" vote for me to cast. i will never forget this recession that we are just coming out of now, the worst recession since the great depression. a treasury secretary, hank paulson, who put his head in his hands and was overwhelmed with what he actually called the collapse -- the potential collapse of capitalism. that's what we faced. we have short memories here. because our life is so filled with fast-moving events every day, some of them wonderful, some of them awful, some of them lifting up our hearts, some of them breaking our hearts, so we don't remember the things that happened a couple of years ago. wh

we are going out to house speaker boehner swearing in members of the house. right now the house is taking the first votes of the session including a vote on the rules for the house, so this market is taking a break. they are expected back shortly about five minutes from now. we will continue our live coverage of speaker boehner right here when he continues. after six terms in the house he became a senator today. we spoke with him on this morning's washington journal. >>> we are going across the capitol this morning to the result rotunda where we are joined by senator jeff blake of the house now crossing over to the senate. since you are not new, excuse me, senator, let's get right to it. you voted no two days ago on the fiscal cliff agreement when it comes to raising the debt ceiling in a month or so. what will be your vote? >> i think we have to use every avenue that we have to drive home the point that we are overspending. there is no bigger issue, no bigger issue right now and the overspending that we are doing and the effect of the debt and deficit on the

then we went through the months and months of talks between the president and boehner. both times, boehner could not deliver because they refused because of grover norquist to allow any tax revenues whatsoever. we had meetings with the vice president, biden and cantor. cantor walked out of those meetings. he is the majority leader in the house. we had the gang of six, the gang of eight. we had this super committee, and they were doing good things, good things, dealing with entitlements and revenues. and a week before they were to report, buy virtue of statute, i get a letter signed by virtually every republican, too bad about the super committee, we're not going to do anything with revenues. so this is not a capsule of a couple of days. this has been going on for years. they cannot cross over the threshold that has been built by grover norquist. people who are rich, who make a lot of money, they are not opposing raising the taxes on them. the only people in america who don't think taxes should be raised on the rich are the republicans who work in this building. so any t

now, in our version agreed to by chairman lucas and myself, put on the calendar by speaker boehner, on the suspension calendar in the house by the rules committee in the house, agreed to on the calendar in the house, we would shave a portion of those subsidies to make sure that we continue to fund all of the farm bill for the next nine months until we can once again come together and write a farm bill. but i have to say as somebody who's been operating in good faith with the committee and the floor to find this situation occurring that is not agreed to on a bipartisan basis, not put forward on a bipartisan basis, i find it to be absolutely outrageous. and it makes you wonder what's really going on here. if in the end the things we agreed to, the things that we worked hard to develop into a farm bill that saves $24 billion at a time when we are right now, people are sitting in rooms trying to decide how to get deficit reduction. and we pass something that saves $24 billion in a fiscally responsible way, cutting programs. we cut 100 different programs and authorizations. we went through
